Last night there was a dance party at the hostel. So much fun to get dressed up and go dancing - even if it is with grade 8 and 9 learners! At first there were not many people there, then slowly the boys showed up. Then the girls followed. The learners split themselves with boys on one side and girls on the other - typical junior high type scenario. But slowly they started to dance and by the end we were all having a great time! I'm trying to learn how they dance, but sometimes I just feel silly. But it doesn't matter - I like to dance, and they like to laugh at me try!
I brought my camera out at the dance and I had one learner grab it and started taking pictures of everyone. Once everyone saw the camera they grouped up to start taking pictures. They LOVE having their picture taken. I wish it was easier to print them, because I would love to print pictures for each of them. But I will print them, they just have to give me money for it. At N$4 a print, that adds up when everyone wants a picture. They like to put up the sign for The Dogg or Gazza and were trying to get me to choose just one. These are two singers that are rivals and I haven't heard enough from either to choose yet, so the picture is of me showing both signs.
Today I went outside to see what everyone was up to. The boys were outside playing their typical soccer game so I watched for a little while. Then I walked over to where the girls were and they were talking and one was having her hair braided. One asked me if I wanted my hair done and I said yes of course! So I have my hair braided now. It's awesome! I really hope that it stays for a while because it took over two hours to fix! Afterwards, I took out my camera again and another photo shot began. This time with the girls in the hostel. They are so funny to watch. And they love putting on sunglasses to take a picture.
All in all it has been a really fun weekend!
Hi Barbara--
ReplyDeleteThank you for posting your blogs with the pictures! I really enjoy finding out what you're doing. I also read 2 of the books on your list--Flipped (borrowed it from Elena) and Einstein's God. I really liked both. A group of us from WUMC also recently read Half the Sky about the plight of women and girls worldwide, and it really affirms the work you're doing. Thank you!!! We miss you and think of you often.
Love, Linda
Hi Linda,
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad you are enjoying the blog. I need to find a way to post more pictures, but I haven't had time to figure it out yet. Flipped was a very cute book. I was visiting a volunteer and picked it up to read and I'm glad I did. Einstein's God was very interesting and it's made me want to read some of the books from the people she interviewed. I will have to remember Half the Sky and try to read it sometime. I'm really having a great time here! Thanks for the comment :)
